National Infertility Awareness Week

Conception is one of the original miracles. Working with women to enhance fertility and support conception is a gift I am grateful for. Every couple has their own story, and every woman has her own struggles with (the journey towards) motherhood. As a Naturopathic Doctor I have the time to really listen and unravel the complicated threads of psychology, biology and pathology. I can see the beautiful intricate designs these weave for each couple and treat the pattern using acupressure, botanical medicine, homeopathy, lifestyle counseling, nutrition, and stress management.

Not every woman is willing to stick with the deep emotional work that can come up with month after month of BFN’s, and that is ok. Digestive and immune system imbalances can also play a significant role in difficult conception, and sometimes working at this more physical level can be easier than delving into the psyche. As a Naturopathic Doctor I believe that the body is inherently capable of healing itself once the obstacles to cure are removed. And, I also believe each person knows at what level s/he needs to do her own healing.

Soon, I will come to my own time of conception, and every woman I have helped along the way will have been my teacher, just as I have been her guide. I choose not to use the word “infertility” in my practice or in my mind – Yes, it can take time, and work, but I have seen many, many babies delivered into those welcome and waiting arms. Some families are conceived in the hearts and minds instead of the body!
